Lightroom split tone tutorial
A quick screencast on how I roll my own split tones in Lightroom...
Here I cover how to use Lightroom to make my own duo tones/ split tones. There are many ways to achieve vintage effects ranging from the baked in presets bundled with Lightroom, to Photoshop plug-ins to third party apps. It's important to note that every image is different. You cannot simply apply any one setting to every image in your library. You must look at the overall existing feel and color palette, decide on what era you want to emulate and decide on an action. Applying the above settings to a photo of a 2012 Ford Mustang will look foolish as will applying the same settings to a photo of a Civil War reenactment.
Study old photos in your family album, go a historical society or museum and make notes on how photos look from different eras, then try and re create them using your digital tools.
Few notes:
1. Use images that are slightly underexposed, have crushed blacks and blown highlights.
2 Experiment with the settings.
3. Learn basic color theory, that will help you to balance your colors.
I proudly live and work in the upper Midwest, Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A. and am inspired by the craftsmen, artists and creatives of the past, their processes, dedication and ownership of their work and lean on this to weave historical aesthetics into my own work while producing fresh and engaging visuals. My workflow is entirely digital, but throughout the process of image making, I strive to give each piece an authentic, handcrafted feel.
