Euphemia

“Euphemia” was shot on multiple trips to Dubai, UAE from 2013 - 2015. While en route the first time, I brought a copy of “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. One chapter in particular, “Euphemia,” bore a remarkable resemblance to Dubai, once a dusty crossroad and quiet trading hub in the Arabian Desert, now a glistening major metropolis.

During my time there, I found humanity outside of the air-conditioned, glass, and aluminum superstructures of the city core. In the old neighborhoods of Al-Satwa and beyond the Old Souk, I noticed life truly began at the ragged edges of the “new city.”

In this 14-image series, organized in sonnet ABBA ABBA CDD ECE, I trace a path away from the reflections to the sand, dirt, and grime of Euphemia.
